Antique Gu-Fei Canopy Day Bed
81"W x 56"D x 89"H
Estimated to be 120 years old, this antique bed was salvaged from Zhejiang Province. A masterful union of art and craft, every single wood panel features hand carved or hand painted details. The facade is especially impressive. Shaped to mimic a traditional Chinese moon door, the gilded carvings each reference an individual narrative scene from the 14th century historical novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The crown of this facade culminates with a soaring phoenix and peony flower motif at the top.
The elaborate details continue to the bed's interior, where there are 5 separate window panels at the back, and another 3 on both the left and right. Each panel contains more gilded carvings and these panels are actually adjustable, allowing the bed to be enclosed if needed. Raising the outer panels to shut the windows reveals more individual hand painted narrative scenes on the interior that combine to tell a story. Antique Chinese beds like this have become a favorite of collectors and interior designers in recent years, and this well preserved bed is a true gem.
